From vehicle list to stamped Schedule 1
Seven steps, the same order every time — whether it's one truck this afternoon or forty client returns before the deadline.
Have this on hand
EIN
Employer Identification Number for the business the vehicle is registered under.
VIN
17-character vehicle identification number for each truck being filed.
Taxable gross weight
Vehicle weight category, used to calculate the tax due.
First-use month
The month the vehicle was first used on public highways during the tax period.
The seven-step filing sequence
Create your filing profile
Set up your business (or client) profile once, with EIN and address on file. Tax professionals can add multiple client profiles under one account, each kept separate.
Add your vehicles
Enter VIN, taxable gross weight, and first-use month for each vehicle, or upload a spreadsheet for fleet and bulk filings. Suspended and agricultural vehicles are flagged as a separate category automatically.
Automatic validation
Each VIN and weight entry is checked for formatting before you move forward, and the tax due is calculated from the category and first-use month.
Final review
A summary screen lists every vehicle, its category, and its calculated tax side by side, so you can compare it against your source records before transmitting.
Choose a payment method
Pay the HVUT due by direct debit, EFTPS, or check/money order, matched to how you or your client prefer to handle IRS payments.
Transmit & track
Submit the return electronically and watch its status move from submitted to accepted. If a return needs attention, you'll see exactly what to correct.
Download Schedule 1
Once accepted, your IRS-stamped Schedule 1 is available to download and print immediately — ready for vehicle registration or renewal.
When is this vehicle's Form 2290 due?
Form 2290 is generally due by the last day of the month following a vehicle's first month of use on public highways. Select the first-use month and year below to estimate the deadline.
Good to know
Vehicles in use since the start of the annual tax period (July) are typically filed during the regular filing season. Vehicles placed in service later in the year follow their own individual deadline, based on the month they were first used.
