Form 2290 deadlines don't run on one calendar
The annual HVUT tax period runs July 1 through June 30. Most vehicles file during the same window each summer — but any vehicle first used later in the year gets its own individual deadline.
Jul 1 – Jun 30 tax period
Vehicles already on the road as of July 1 are filed for the new tax period, with the standard filing deadline falling on August 31. This is the busiest stretch for owner-operators, fleets, and the tax professionals filing on their behalf.
July 1
New HVUT tax period begins for vehicles already in use.
August 31
Standard filing deadline for vehicles in use since July.
Ongoing
Vehicles first used after July follow their own deadline — the last day of the month after their first-use month.
June 30
Tax period ends; the cycle restarts July 1.
Deadline by first-use month
General rule: the return is due by the last day of the month following the vehicle's first month of use.
When a due date falls on a weekend or holiday
If the last day of the month falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deadline generally shifts to the next business day. Confirm the exact date for your filing period before relying on it.
Tracking deadlines across many vehicles
A single universal deadline doesn't work once you're filing for more than one client. These habits keep deadlines from being missed.
One calendar, every client
Maintain a single calendar that records each client's relevant filing deadline rather than tracking deadlines separately per file.
Reminders before the due date
Set reminders ahead of the actual deadline, giving time to collect missing information and resolve questions.
Flag new vehicles immediately
Add newly placed-in-service vehicles to your tracking system as soon as a client acquires them, not at the next annual filing period.
